Pathum Thani

Pathum Thani is a neighbouring province of Bangkok. It is situated on the Chao Phraya basin with plenty of canals and orange plantations. Its original name is Muang Sam Khok, which was founded during the Ayutthaya era. It was the settlement for the Mon people migrating from Mothama (in Myanmar) over 350 years ago. In the year 1815 when King Rama II made a royal visit to this area, the inhabitants offered him plenty of lotus flowers which is the origin of the present name.

The Pathum Thani Town is only 46 kms. from Bangkok. It occupies an area of 1,525 square kilometres.

Nakhon Pathom

Nakhon Pathom lies on the main overland route used for centuries to link India to Thailand via the Three Pagodas Pass, so it is only natural that Buddhism in Thailand began at this ancient town.

The town is dominated by the massive Phra Pathom Chedi, 127 metres tall and the most venerated Buddhist monument in Thailand. The original chedi was built by the Mons in the 10th century, and successive renovations have placed a bigger chedi on top. All sorts of interesting items surround the chedi, including Buddhas in every sort of pose, holy trees, replica chedis, museums and ceremonial halls. The ashes of King Vajiravudh, who completed the present-day restoration, are buried there.

The king's lovely summer residence, Sanam Chan Palace is close by, built in the English Tudor style. Beautifully restored, it is an interesting museum of a royal residence, where the king translated Shakespeare's plays.

Other places of interest include Buddha Monthon, a large park area dedicated to the promotion of Buddhism; the Rose Garden, a resort popular for its extensive gardens and well presented cultural show; and Samphran Elephant Ground and Zoo that puts on daily elephant and crocodile performances.

Supanburi

Supanburi had been an important border town. Involving battles and wars. This caused regular damage through all ages in the past until the Ratanakosin era during the reign of King Rama VI. Then the Suphanburi communities were consolidated and settle down on the east bank of the Tha River (Suphan River) as it is now.

Kanjanaburi

Thailand Travel Kanchanaburi, Thailand (AP) -- Rod Beattie sweeps a metal detector over a watermelon field along the River Kwai where six decades ago 2,000 Allied prisoners of war perished। The detector buzzes, and the wiry Australian anxiously claws the earth with his bare hands.

Until then, Kanchanaburi was poorly served by two small, rather shabby museums and Thai tourist guides who often pass on meager, or outright, fictitious stories. This despite an industry built around the railway, bridge and river which have attracted millions of tourists and piles of cash since Hollywood released its classic film "The Bridge on the River Kwai" in 1957.

Beattie says he strived for an unbiased presentation through information panels, photographs, artifacts, video clips and an interactive, detailed topographical map of the 258-mile railway, its stations and POW camps. The collection includes rare Japanese photographs provided by Ranichi Sugano, believed to be the last surviving senior engineer from the railway.

The museum doesn't stint on displays of Japanese cruelty

depicting POWs turned into walking skeletons while hacking through disease-ridden jungles under their captors' guns. But neither does it portray all Japanese soldiers as brutes nor their railway engineers as blustering incompetents.

Bangkok

Bangkok or Krung Thep which means the City of Angels was constructed in 1782 or 225 years ago. Presently, Bangkok has approximately 10 million population and it is considered one of the biggestcity in the world.AttractionsCultural Heritage, the Grand Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Temple of the Dawn, Chao Phraya River and Canals (once Venice of the East), Shopping Paradise, Excellent Seafood and Local Dishes, Superb Seaside Resorts and Good Accommodation, ExtensiveTours all over the country, Thai Boxing, Thai Classical Dances, Golfing, and Other Entertainments.

Nontaburi [Durian town]

Nonthaburi is about 20-km northwest of Bangkok, and though technically a separate province, it is contiguous with the sprawl of the Bangkok metropolis. Despite its absorption this century, Nonthaburi actually predates Bangkok and was once a major stop between the sea and former capital of Ayutthaya. It can be reached by expressway, or the more charming (and cheap) river taxi ride up the Chao Phraya River.

Fruit FairOne attraction is the floating market at the mouth of the canal Klong Bang Khu Wiang, a 10-minute boat ride from Amphoe Bang Kruai. The market starts around 5 a.m. and wraps up before midday. That, and a few notable temples aside, excitement is limited to the annual fruit fair from April to June when everyone gorges on durian, mangosteen and mangoes. Colorful support comes from parades of decorated floats, exhibitions, local entertainment and beauty pageants where those offended by the heady scent of durian will find "Miss Durian" less pungent and much more appealing.
